Volunteer as a School Governor in Birmingham

Birmingham City Council is seeking to recruit volunteers with business skills and experience to serve on school governing boards throughout the city. School governors play a vital role in improving school performance. Encouraging staff to volunteer is a compelling and cost effective way of offering professional development and building the skills of your employees.

Through volunteering, the governor will:

  • make a real difference to young people’s lives, helping them to realise their potential;
  • gain experience of working at board level in the education sector;
  • develop valuable leadership and decision-making skills; and
  • enhance the reputation of your business for Corporate Social Responsibility, by providing a service to the school and the local community.

Requirements: No specific qualifications are required, just a willingness to work as part of a team, provide professional challenge and use your skills, in particular:

  • people skills;
  • strategic thinking;
  • knowledge of finance or change management.

Please note - volunteers are not required to have a background in education.

Time commitment: The role of the school governor can be demanding, but very rewarding. Under usual circumstances, you should expect to spend around 10 days a year on your governing responsibilities.

Location: Vacancies across Birmingham – we will work with you to find a suitable match.
