Brasshouse Translation and Interpreting Services (BTIS) was established in 1990 and is Birmingham City Council’s language unit offering translation, interpreting and accessible information services.

During this time we have acquired an in-depth knowledge of the city's diverse community and its ever-changing language needs, enabling us to offer advice and understand your individual requirements.

We are pleased to be able to offer language support in over 100 languages including British Sign Language. We aim to provide you with a high quality, professional language service that is reliable, cost effective and responsive. We are also able to provide you with consultancy and expertise to assist you in making communication accessible to everyone.


First class linguists:

All of our interpreters undergo a thorough induction process;

All linguists sign and adhere to our code of practice and information governance policy;

Professional service:

BTIS is a corporate member of the Institute of Translation & Interpreting (ITI) and a member of the Association of Translation Companies (ATC);

We are passionate about the services we provide, most of the team are linguists themselves and all are able to provide you with expert advice;

Secure data:

Information shared with our linguists for the purposes of translation and interpreting is sent and returned to us via encrypted email (Egress);

All information is stored on EU secure servers.

Services provided:

Accessible Information Services – British Sign Language (BSL) interpreting, Braille, large print, audio recording etc.

Interpreting (verbal) -  face to face and telephone interpreting available

Translation (written) – in a range of formats including Word, PDF, Excel, Powerpoint Training Sessions – available for volunteer interpreters and for professionals working with interpreters.
